Sundarban Camp 23rd December 2007
The East India Chapter of IFRP held a day long health screening camp on Sunday the 23rd December 2007 in the Sundarbans, approximately 150 Km. from the metropolis of Kolkata.
The camp was organised under the overall supervision of Dr S.K.Sharma the President of the Eastern Indian Chapter of the Fellowship and had active support from the Ministry of Sunderban Affairs, Government of West Bengal. The Government also provided site support, planning of logistics, transport, administration, armed security (in a remote area), and refreshments for physicians and patients. The group praised the assistance given by Dr. Kanti Ganguli, the Minister in charge.
A total of 9 doctors, and 8 paramedical and supporting staff gave their time freely on a Sunday in examining and advising 1760 men, women and children. The doctors were all renowned specialists who went through the enormous case load in a record time.
Specialities represented were General Medicine, Surgery,
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Imaging. Local general
practitioners also participated and agreed to provide future
supervision and treatment. As well as clinical examination, a number
of diagnostic procedures were undertaken including Cystoscopy
.hysteroscopy and sigmoidoscopy. –follow on treatment was arranged
with Block MOH Dr. Partha .
IFRP International Chairman Dr. Himansu Basu praised the team for
their fantastic efforts which brought an element of health care to a
remote part of India. “ What you have achieved in 10 months ,we
could not achieve in 10 years. This is a record for IFRP on a number
of counts and will set a gold standard for service opportunities for
our Fellowship. We thank you for Sharing Rotary this way “– he said.
Further similar camps are planned for 2008.
